Project Overview

Lane Community College's quarterly schedule was a utilitarian course listing in a stodgy, colorless format. The college needed the same information delivered, but as something students would actually want to read.

The strategy was to develop a comprehensive visual system and use photography intentionally. We built the CES Brand Style Guide to document everything — type, grid, hierarchy, photography approach, how to handle different content types. That consistency became the foundation for multiple issues without the publication feeling static.

Photography wasn't decorative. Every image was selected because it related to a specific course or theme. The layouts were designed around those images to guide the viewer's eye. The visual language connected to Lane's concurrent ad campaigns, so the magazine felt like a natural extension of the enrollment work.

The Work

I designed and art directed multiple quarterly issues over the course of two years. That meant designing every spread, managing complex InDesign files, art directing photography, creating ads and graphics for each issue, and maintaining the layout patterns that kept the publication cohesive.

By the later issues, I was handling almost all aspects of the design and art direction. The result was a publication that felt alive and organized at the same time.
